ECEESPE2025 communication: European EuRRECa registry on gender incongruence in adolescents

This communication (poster) was presented at the ESPE/ESE 2025 Joint Congress (ECEESPE2025). The work presents the preliminary results of the module dedicated to gender incongruence within the European Core Registry (EuRRECa project), an international multicentre effort to harmonise care and foster clinical research.

What the project is

The registry module collects demographic and follow-up information on adolescents with gender incongruence, including mental health comorbidities, gonadal hormone suppression (GnRH analogues), gender-affirming hormone therapy, fertility preservation and gender-affirming surgery.

Preliminary results

As of December 2024, six centres from five European countries (Belgium, France, Poland, Switzerland and the Netherlands) had joined, with a total of 310 patients registered (Ghent 119, Katowice 81, Nijmegen 39, Lausanne 36, Amsterdam 27, Angers 8). Preliminary data showed differences between centres in the protocols for starting hormone suppression and affirming therapy, reflecting variations in national regulations and reimbursement policies.

A relevant finding is that mental health comorbidities were frequently reported among adolescents, which underlines the need for a comprehensive psychological assessment and targeted psychological care. The registry seeks to standardise protocols and to guide evidence-based recommendations.
